Pupils and staff at Holy Trinity Primary School in Cookstown, Northern Ireland, are celebrating after winning a £50,000 prize in the Province’s People’s Millions competition. The cash will be used to develop a multi-sensory room for use by all children in the district with disabilities, and this will be the first of its kind in a mainstream school.

It is anticipated the sensory room will be up and running at Holy Trinity Primary for the start of the new school year in September. The announcement that Holy Trinity had successfully triumped over the other shortlisted projects, was made in Cookstown by Big Lottery representatives.

Teacher Fiona Hampsey told me that staff and pupils were ‘over the moon when news filtered through that the school had been awarded the £50,000 funding.

“It’s been such a big project for the school and the children have worked so hard. In fact, that was their homework on Monday night – to tell everyone about it and to get their votes in,” said Miss Hampsey.

Miss Hampsey told me the support and encouragement received from people in Cookstown and further afield across Northern Ireland was a tremendous boost and helped seal the funding which they had hoped for.

The project, which will be run by the Parent Teacher Association and volunteers, will transform existing rooms within Holy Trinity Primary School into the sensory/nurturing facility which will be used by children with both physical and learning difficulties as well as those experiencing emotional and behavioural problems.

Now, the scheme will go before the Education and Library Board for approval before being put out to tender.

“It’s not just for pupils at Holy Trinity, it’s for everyone, and we want to thank the people of Cookstown for getting behind us,” added Miss Hampsey. “We’ve had so many texts and phone calls coming through to the school – the phone hasn™t stopped ringing!”

The People’s Millions is a partnership between the Big Lottery Fund and the regional television network ITV, and since its launch in 2005, more than £1 million has been awarded to 17 projects across Northern Ireland.

Article by Sam Cassels, The Schools Programme, Architecture and Design Scotland

First published at http://www.engageforeducation.org

The Architecture and Design Scotland (A+DS) Schools Programme was set up to help Local Authorities use good design to deliver Curriculum for Excellence in better schools. This was an ambitious yet straightforward enough remit to coax me back into the public sector after 25 years of selling strategic design advice to over 100 organisations.

Our small team was established as a separate programme within A+DS in 2008, tasked with informing policy making, helping local authorities, and influencing project delivery.

My experience of running the programme has taught me two things: participation is the way we do things in Scotland, and collaboration is the way we make decisions in Scotland.

This doesn’t seem like a big deal until you share this approach with international colleagues facing similar challenges and with similar ambitions. For me the key difference is that while many are still debating an elusive future, we are getting on with rebuilding our schools as best we can through Scotland’s Schools for the Future.

To paraphrase Donald Rumsfeld – there are known unknowns and there are unknown unknowns. What we do know is that some of our pupils are in buildings we need to replace, so that’s what we’re doing.

We know that pupils, staff, and communities know their own lives better than we do, so that’s why we talk to them first. We know that collaborating for better outcomes leads to… better outcomes. And I know that design matters.

What this has led to on the ground is what I call incremental radicalism. Rather than wait for the epiphany which is the ultimate school design, we can simply learn from others – whether it’s from the school down the road or from the innovative global projects showcased in Making Space 2010.

Does this mean I lack ambition? Perhaps what I lack is patience. I do not know the future – and neither do you. But I do see good things happening which should be shared, good ideas which should be celebrated, and good people who should be supported.

We ask our schools to do remarkable things every day. If you know a better way of how design can help make that possible, then please let me know.

Let’s face it – even if you’re excited to start school, the new year is always an adjustment. Here areಌ books to get you in the right frame of mind!

What Learning Leaves by Taylor Mali· Taylor Mali, poet and former teacher, has been called the “Poet Laureate of the Classroom.” Taylor writes with real heart and understanding about the magic – and challenge – of teaching. If you need a jumpstart to your day, read “What Teachers Make.” It will make you cheer!

Both Art and Craft: Teaching Ideas that Spark Learningby Diana Mitchell, Leila Christenbury· A book for anyone who teaches reading or writing – it helps you find ways to integrate the fun, crafty activities students love in a way that really helps them learn. Don’t miss the “50 Alternatives to the Book Report” section – guaranteed to make those stacks of papers easier to face!

Classroom Instruction That Works: Research-Based Strategies for Increasing Student Achievement by Robert J. Marzano, Debra J. Pickering, Jane E. Pollock· The title sounds ponderous, but this book is a fairly easy read, offering ideas to implement in your classroom right away. From assigning homework and giving praise to using cooperative learning techniques and graphic organizers, teachers of all levels and subjects can benefit from this book.

Our Kids: Building Relationships in the Classroom by Chris Bowen· Bowen’s memoir will be difficult to put down and, sometimes, difficult to keep reading. You’ll meet some students and think, “I taught that kid!” and some who make you think, “I’m glad I never got that kid.” But overall, it is an insightful, emotional reminder of why many people choose to teach.

Literature Circles by Harvey Daniels· This book offers ways to implement student-led discussions and “book clubs” in the classroom. Daniels uses examples and ideas from real teachers at all grade levels. He also demonstrates how literary circles offer an alternative method for meeting national standards and preparing students for standardized tests.

The First Days of School: How to Be an Effective Teacher by Harry K. Wong, Rosemary T. Wong· This classic guide to classroom management is often called “required reading” for new teachers, but veterans can benefit from a read – or a re-read – before the new school year.

Teaching Outside the Box: How to Grab Your Students by their Brains by LouAnne Johnson· This book covers a little bit of everything, from discipline to student portfolios, but with a unique approach that allows experienced teachers to implement these ideas without feeling like they have to abandon their own teaching style.

Up the Down Staircase by Bel Kaufman· If you’ve never read this classic novel about teaching, do yourself a favor and read it – if possible, before this school year starts! It will make you eager to get back in the classroom.

I Read It, but I Don’t Get It: Comprehension Strategies for Adolescent Readers by Cris Tovani· Don’t let the “adolescent reader” part fool you: this book works for all ages. Tovani identifies common problems of struggling readers and offers tools to help those students finally make a connection between the words they stare at and the content they need to know.

Active Learning: 101 Strategies to Teach Any Subject by Mel Silberman· Designed in an easy-to-read format that lets you grasp each activity in moments, this book is the perfect solution for those times when you think, “I have to find a new way to do this content before it puts the kids to sleep!” The activities are best for middle school and older, though teachers of younger grades should be able to adapt many of them.

If You’re Not Here, Please Raise Your Handby Kalli Dakos· This is a great collection of poetry to share with your elementary or middle school students. From the student who has a hard time concentrating on a beautiful day to the student who brings a memorable show and tell item, these are fun, relatable poems that celebrate school. A great addition to your classroom library for the new year!

The Courage to Teach: Exploring the Inner Landscape of a Teacher’s Life (Parker J. Palmer)· This book is a beautiful, inspirational reminder that teaching comes from the inside – from the teacher’s heart, soul, spirit, and brain. A must-read for all teachers.
