I have seen how couples get so excited when they celebrate their anniversary, they plan special things for each other, women put on their best gowns, and men look up for the finest clothe they have, there is a mixture of cool emotions that goes on in each person, whether they are celebrating one year or twenty years.

The celebration of an anniversary is just a special moment, whether you celebrate a wedding anniversary, school anniversary or any other anniversary. Have you ever thought of celebrating your anniversary with the Lord? How many years have you been walking with God? Have you celebrated any of those years?

It would be just so nice to celebrate our anniversary of walking with the Lord, we should put on our best and finest clothes, and we should prepare something special to God, prepare or do something that he would enjoy.  God is always giving us special presents, special moments. So, why don’t prepare something nice to Him on the anniversary day? Do you even remember the first day that you met your Lord? If you do, then start celebrating your anniversary, plan something nice, put up a table for two, with candles, and talk to him, glorify Him, put on some adoration music, and there in that nice decorated table start thanking Him for all the goods He has done in your life, tell Him how special He is to you. If you can’t prepare something like a ‘romantic dinner’ with God, them write Him a nice poem or a nice card, explain to God why He is so important to you, I am sure that God would love to hear us telling Him nice things. We love for other people to tell us from time to time that we are special, we love when people remember us, or when they prepare something beautiful for us, and don’t you think God would feel the same? I am sure He would love to see that you have made something special for Him.

It is not fair that He is always thinking of us, and sometimes we seem not to care about Him, going to church is not enough, we should have special times with God, only you and Him, nobody else. It’s time to start celebrating our anniversary with the Lord, let’s show Him that we really love him, that we really care for Him.

WHY CELEBRATE ADVENT?

 

Why do we celebrate Advent anyhow?  What is with all this candle lighting, the wreath, the tree, the manger scene? What is Christmas really all about? Oh come; let us adore Him, Jesus Christ the Lord.  It is Advent Season, those days leading up to the birth of Jesus, the only begotten Son of God, the Messiah, the Christ, the child born to be King of kings and Savior to the world.

 

The Advent season is a creation of the early Western churches that looked to Rome as their head and for leadership and was originally celebrated in much the same way Lent is celebrated with fasting, prayers, devotion and penitence.  It appears that Advent began somewhere around the early to mid fourth century AD in France and some say it was started by Celtic Monks incorporating both Celtic and Christian beliefs and from there it spread throughout Europe and eventually to the New World.  Today Christians celebrate Advent, those weeks leading up to Christmas as a reminder of all God has given, of His gift for our sake.  

 

There are few days considered more sacred in all of Christendom than the season of Advent, those six weeks that lead up to Christmas, the events leading up to the birth of Jesus, a special time of celebrating God’s love come to Earth.  It is a spiritual feast of blessings and total awe as we think about the whole reason behind this season, everything from the wreath, the tree, the manger scene, the angels, the shepherds, the music, carols, candles, those shimmering lights that light up the winter darkness, the star, the Yule log, all of it proclaiming the night that Love came to Earth bringing the gift of peace, goodwill toward all men, God became man (flesh) born into the world for man’s sake and He didn’t have to do it but He loves us that much, so much that He did.  Like it was anticipated from old, Jesus birth was foretold over and over in the Old Testament we anticipate His second coming and this time not as a baby born to be King of kings but as King and Savior of the world.

 

Advent is symbolic.  It is a reminder of what was, is and will be; our promise from God, His gift to us and our hope, our only hope.  

 

Advent is the joyful acknowledgement and proclamation of that wonderful event.  It serves to remind us of why He came and calls us to come and worship and adore Him, Jesus, the Christ, and our Lord.  Jesus came as the ultimate expression of love, the very same Jesus who was with God, is God, the Word, the Creator of all life and He didn’t have to do it.  Had Jesus not been born, He would not have died and then rose from the grave, victor over death and the redemption for the sin of the world, for each of us, our sin.  It is because He chose to come into this world as human and chose to be our sacrifice, the Lamb of God who gave His all so that we have an open door invitation back into the graces of God the Father and a place in Gods Kingdom to come.  Had He not been born we would have no hope and no promise of life.  This is what Advent is all about, acknowledging God’s gift of love, His sacrifice for our sake.  Oh come; let us adore Him, Jesus Christ our Lord.

 

The Advent Wreath, the candles, the Christmas tree, the holly berries, the praise music, the songs of joy, the manger scene, the shepherds, the kings who came bearing gifts, the animals, the lowly donkey that carried Mary on its back, the Herald Angels that proclaimed Jesus birth, the star that shone upon the manger; all these are symbolic, just things that remind us of God’s priceless gift to us that began when Jesus left His home in Heaven and came to Earth to live among men. This is what Advent is all about.  It is a reminder of the reason for Christmas.  

 

One of the most beautiful symbols of this celebration is the lighting of the Advent Wreath.  The wreath is a circle made of evergreen branches.  The circle is unending, eternal as is God’s love.  The red holly berries and bow represent the blood shed by the Lamb of God, Jesus, for the redemption of our sin, the reason He was born.  It was to become our salvation that Jesus was born.  The five candles (four red and one white) represent the Light; Jesus is the way, the truth, the life and the very Light of the world.  He is the light that shines in our darkness, our hope.  

 

One candle is lit on each Sunday in Advent, one on the first, two on the second Sunday, three on the third and four on the fourth Sunday and then the fifth candle, the taller white candle in the center is lit on Christmas, Christmas Eve the night of Jesus birth.  Oh come; let us adore Him.
